yeah there are no rules. You can put your affiliate link anywhere you want. Some article directories won't allow you to directly link to the vendor's landing page using your affiliate link. Ezine articles won't allow you to do that. Check out articlebase if you want to be able to directly link to affiliate's landing pages.
It depends on the article directory, but most of the time you cannot. You can put a link to your site in the author box however.
