what are the reasons for penalizing or banned a site by google?

can anybody tell me abt the different reasons for penalizing a site, and if a site can be penalized for reciprocal link exchange?

 

Reciprocal link exchanges can't ban or penalize a website.

 

One of the biggest reasons to get banned on google is due to exchanging links with sites which are not relevant to your site. That is called banning due to bad neighbourhood.

One more reason if you have a new domain and if you build a lot of links in a very short time then there are chances that google might ban you. As we all know that google is a very smart search engine and if by any chance it comes to know that you are doing something to improve your rankings then it will ban you.

There are many reasons by which a website can get banned or penalized. The common one's which some webmasters might do knowingly or unknowingly are keyword stuffing, hidden text, cloaking, alt image tag spamming, meta tag stuffing and title tag stuffing. Hope you have not done any of these.
As for reciprocal linking the site don't get penalized.

That is incorrect. A site does not get banned if it exchanges links with sites which are not relevant to their site and bad neighbourhood is a different subject.

WHAT??? Google doesn't ban a site if it gets loads of links in a short span of time but it will be flagged by the engine and the rankings of the site will get affected and why should Google ban a site if it comes to know that you are trying to improve the rankings of the site? After all that's what everyone is trying to do on the net...In'it? Google will only ban the site if you are trying to improve the rankings in an unethical manner.

You are pretty much right with your reasons of site getting banned. However, on one of my sites i didnt do any of it and still it got penalized on google.

And after a lot of researching I found few of links where not themed so probably i thought thats a major reason.

And if you don't mind can you please explain me what is bad neighbourhood???

There are chances like excessive linking..

 

If you link out to bad sites, this will get you at least a penalization, make sure your outgoing links are to websites that are at least indexed by google.

 

One thing that I personally experienced was taht when I put a link to an adult website on one of my websites, the rankig dropped a lot, as soon as I took the link off, the ranking came back up

 

Hey cybotrix there are many other things as well which are to be considered to know the reason of your site getting penalized while researching other than what I mentioned.

Again I'll say that getting links form irrelevant sites will not cause any harm for the site unless they are from gambling or adult sites or sites which are grey barred by Google. Guess you didn't link with any of those.
