What are the potential applications of Web Analytics?

    Hello People... :)

I've been hearing a lot about Web Analytics (or let's say e-Business Analytics) all over the internet these days.

    The BIG names are:
    www.Omniture.com
    www.Google.com/Analytics

Google Analytics is Free, and Omniture is the leading paid player in the Web Analytics market.

I'd like to know what Web Analytics can potentially do, or help you with...

    My understanding of the same:
    1. Web Analytics helps you understand site visitor traffic and flow, thereby helping you target better by making suitable changes (or updates) to your website, and the way you want your website visitors to behave on your site.
    2. Since Web Analytics can help you understand the visitor flow and trends of the same, it can possibly help you perform some SEO, both on-site and off-site.

Surprisingly or not, I'm not able to come up with more applications for Web Analytics. A search in the major search engines didn't help me much either.

Is there something else that anyone here knows or can think up of something?

Please play your sport on this one, here... :)

    You have missed this point
Web analytics is a important thing to consider when someone is buying a website and this data can help the buyer to determine the value for the site.

    OmG !!

well web analytics helps to understand site visitors and tells you whether you build new feature on site is giving you any more money against your investment.

Web analytics also tells you what pages are bottleneck on your users visit and can you optimize them ?

Web Analytics if properly used generates a indirect feedback look of your customer (e.g should I put video on website ? will it convert more ?) you can do a/b testing for this and with the help of web analytics tool you can determine if you will be able to determine if it make sense to build video for or not ? it can save hell lot of money which you would otherwise invest and your user wouldnt like it.

My understanding is that 90% of website features render no Return on Investment and you need to know what are the rest 10% and scale them up ?

    Hope this help !

Shoot any questions if you have , and I will try and give more detailed answers.

    Thanks,Ravi
