    With all the changes that Google is implementing the basic strategies that were used 10 years ago are still working.

    Instead of selling a bunch of fluff to the masses what is needed is to build websites like they used to be done. Sites that have content for people to read and use and are actually helpful to them.

    Then links will come and people will share your website with one another.

    There are a lot of people that are saying that this and that are dead. These things are not dead and as the internet revolution rolls around they will eventually come back into favor. These people are trying to make money for themselves for the most part and sell their products so they are going to try to sell you on their point if view.

    The other ways of link building are also still around. There are manual submitters and automatic submitters that can still be used to get links back to your site. These still work for traffic even if the great Google does not support them.

    The name of the game is to get traffic. Of course there are some sources that you never want traffic from unless you are in that business as well.

    One of the biggest lies I have seen if to get links from places that offer the same as you do. Now who are you going to visit? You site, which is more than likely the smaller site compared to everyone else, or the larger sites that you are linking to? Why do you want to be a traffic funnel for them and drive your ownself out of business?

    Anyway, just a few of my thoughts.

    Link building isn't dead, some services are less effective like directory submissions to low quality directories or press release (0 SEO value) while other services like guest posting and social presence are now more important in term of SEO results.

    Article marketing still effective when done the right way - One well written article published once offering real value to readers. Blog commenting on no follow & follow authority blogs relevant to your niche still works as long as you don't spam blogs with useless comments. The Same applies to forums.

    It's all about value offered to visitors and readers IMO

    I don't think link building is "a thing of the past". Links to your site from other sites tell search engines that your site has relevance/connection to other sites on the net, so who your site is linking to and who links to your site is important.

    The best link building method for me right now is guest blogging. It not only helps you build links to your site, it also get you traffic to your site. It's a great way to build a rep within your niche too.

    Hope that helps. Have a good day!

    article directories through their
    spinning software help towards linkbuilding?
    Do the links count as high quality?

    In my opinion, seo like people adapted. That's what is about. So new methods are there. If few years ago, you could get #1 with few links, no matter what were the origins, well now, you have to focus more over quality. That's what is all about. Spam is what made Google to adapt i think. If everybody would've played fair, we would've still worked under the same rule now too..

    Unless the government changed its websites it used to be posting to their forums at .gov sites because they weren't in business to profit... and so searching for .GOV sites and in url the word blog and forum you could find lots of gold nuggets for dropping posts that had do-follow links in your post of website. Also, because it's considered 'good neighborhood' sites by Google logarithm it was win/win for linking. I have no idea if they changed to rel="nofollow" in the recent 2 to 3 years. If not, game still on. use your Google and Yahoo algorithms to dig them out example = .gov inurl: forum etc many ways of locating them. Just DON'T spam them. post relevant responses to former posts and fit your link in referring to it as somebody elses site. If it looks like spam...game over.

    So I decided to dig some of them out only because I'm such a nice guy.
    here they are, they work and they do wonders for your backlinking.
    I'm not in SEO as much anymore, but when I was these were some of my secret weapons. Have fun :D

    Replace "keyword" with your keyword (Example "computer sales" or "borchures")

    // Government and Edu (colleges)
    site:.edu inurl:blog "keyword"
    site:.gov inurl:blog "keyword"

    // Blogs with your keyword
    inurl:blog "keyword"
    inurl:forum "keyword"

    // Find sites that allow comments (with your keyword being relevant in blog)
    Keyword "Remember my personal information" "Notify me of follow-up comments"

    your welcome :D

    In answer to your questions, all that is mentioned beforehand such as forum posting, blog commenting, article submission, directory submission and social bookmarking are effective in different ways and different levels. But I would add one more key thing, patience. In order to be effective, one should be patient and not be hasty. You can post and comment all you want but if you do do so in a "bulk fashion" or bulk link build, the results will not be that effective long term. Doing all that has been mentioned is effective if done so at a moderate pace.

    The best approach is to not think about it as "Link Building". In reality, as internet marketers we should get rid of that term so we're not in the wrong mindset. The better way to think about it is as "relationship building". You want to build a relationship with your audience and your readers. Whatever you do to build a link should have your readers in mind, whether its going to give them the information they are looking for or solve a problem they have.

    When you are guest blogging, you need a great article otherwise the other blog's owner won't want to put it up on their site. A 500 word article with fluff and a link won't cut it.

    When looking at blog commenting, which comment are you possibly going to follow back to their site. Someone saying something short and quick about the article: "great read, thanks for the great information!" or someone that comments on the article itself giving an example how the article helped them and ways they implemented it? You'll start thinking that maybe that commenter has some other great information at their own blog.
