Another clueless DP poster who just got his first computer and now considers himself an expert.

As i said that was my take and as i also said it depends on what view point you want to come across from. hackers are normaly problem fixes and the term hacker is both used for those who write code and exploit it however both groups use similar problem solving techniques. hacking is just an act of finding a clever and counterintuitive solution to a problem. To explain in depth would take a while so why dont you do us a favour and post your answer?

Well, he is already posted his answer in the first post, nevermind, anyway you both are right but ЄxDeus is talking in general! cus as you mention the hacker is the one who breaks security systems and that's not all what a hacker do!

You said a hacker is one that "destructs" programs and finds loop holes. Crackers do that. A cracker is a hacker, too, but not all hackers are crackers. Hacker is an honorable thing to be, something most people don't know. I've already explained this but no one on DP ever reads previous posts.

    S/ash understands.

    Hackers have no soul.

What about hackers that are crackers?

Ok, I just said that because it rhymes.

"destructs" programs and finds loop holes in the sense they look into how it works i was saying anything about cracking the program. I did read the first page but im sure this thread had 3 pages before =)

I worked as a programmer many years ago, and hackers were bad programmers who hacked good code and made it bad, or just wrote bad code in the first place. When we're in a hurry we might have just hacked some code together for a quick fix, or if we really wanted to get down into the nitty gritty we'd hack the code (deconstruct it) to make it better.

But, drhowaddrfine's initial explanation was as accurate as it gets.

In my own opinion I'd go a little further in that to become a cracker in the truest sense (not just using other people's software), usually requires a fair bit of skill and learning, a good knowledge of programming, a spattering (at least) of machine code, a lot of know-how on how operating systems work, and in many cases good social engineering skills.

In most cases "l33t hacker" is synonymous with "script kiddie".

A hacker is a person or a group of person that hack stuffs. They can use tools and it doesn't necessarily means that they can program though it is very unlikely that you can understand deep level stuff if you don't know about computers.

A coder and a programmer is just the same.
