What are the best web directories that are worth paying for?

The only two I have on my list right now are the Yahoo Directory and Best Of The Web. Anybody know of any other really good directories that have been around for a while? I would definitely pay for a submission to Dmoz but unfortunately they don't have that option available.

Maybe dont judge a directory as a whole, for example a directory might be recognised but for the category that you wish to use it might not even give you a backlink for the site that you submit, there might be a smaller directory that just happens to have a strong category that you re interested in submitting to.

After all, its not like sites get submitted to and listed on the homepages of these directories.

I personally feel its pointless just going by overall reputation of a directory, check out the specific category that you hope to get your site listed in, the rest of the directory should be less of a concern, if its reputable then there should be no concern about whats going on throughout the rest of the directory.

My question is, why should you or anybody put hundreds of dollars and in return
get 2 backlinks and most likely never make a dent in your PR anyway?

But even if you get high PR, what good will it make for you if your site is lacking content?
One page PR 6 site won't impress your visitors if all you have in there is Adsense and
made for suckers free template and surely won't make them wanna to link to you.

    :)

And what do you think that people that offer SEO services do?

The funny thing is that truely and actually, the only people optimizing a search engine is google, constantly, the term SEO is over used, incorrectly used, abused and often used to confuse.

rather than giving you one of the many lists of directories etc, i suggest you use this simple tool/test and let google tell you what it considers to be the more/most powerful web directories by citation (taking its many on and off page factors into account) by doing a search for: www web directory - space between www and web and directory. that should give you a good start - lots of top directories there, and some surprises too.

you can use this any one of many ways:
    say entering, www travel directory
    www finance directory
    www 'your city' directory
    etc etc

i also check the page/category i'm submitting to in a directory to see if it's been cached/indexed.

    Why use www?

Never mind it adds 40 Millions additional sites to web directory search
and exclude domains that aren't using www, what is the point for doing that?
