As what Richie Ni said...deep linking is the key. Don't just link build for you index page but the whole pages of your site. Focus on it.

 

Building back links to each page on your site is really the only way to get them ALL indexed if you have a significant number of pages. But this isn't really feasible in most cases.

HTML or XML site maps may help the search engines crawl your site, but they don't really do much for increasing the number of pages indexed. Internal linking structures like your navigation, contextual links, etc. as well as the PRIORITY in your XML sitemap will help the search engines determine which pages are most important (and therefore should be indexed first), but the search engines typically are only going to index a certain percentage of your pages.

Once I built a website using Microsoft Frontpage which automatically adds a sitemap that list out every single page in the site. Google indexed each and every page of that site. What was funny about that site was the fact that the pages had absolutely no information on them. Yet, Google still indexed the whole thing...

 

Having links to your pages will greatly improve not only your number of indexed pages but also the frequency by which they are indexed which to me is more important. Sure social media links work well because Google indexes social media/Web 2.0 sites more often for the fact that they often have fresh content. I have heard but not tested the idea that links from blogspot domains work great for fast indexation of newer sites.
