What are the Best steps, when doing Keyword research?

Some people out here do focus on keyword density some prefer 10- 15% and some around 7 %. But i myself don't focus on keyword density rather i write the articles in a normal way and then it still get keyword density around 2.5 - 3%. Keyword density too much seems to be awkward and make your article clumpy.
