first understand what a buying keyword is. if you sell chairs via your website, the traffic from "chair" is probably not targeted enough. people looking for "cheap chairs" "buy chairs" "chair where to buy" etc. are very important for your keyword research as well.

make a search for buying keywords and with some excel magic you can put together a list that might give you a good starting point.

There are several tools you could use, like Market Samurai, WordTracker or others. Also, you could go to Fiverr and have someone do the whole thing for you for five bucks

As what I've learned from others, most specifically on webinars, best choose keywords with low competition. Let's say with a minimum global searches of 3,000 per month. And don't use keywords with 50,000 searches because it's likely to compete with others since the keywords are overly used by others.

The first focus of keyword research is pointing first the main keywords that best describe your site. Then see if your list of main keywords are very competitive. After your main keywords, go for the list of your minor keywords and add also your product keywords. And lastly, work for the long tail keywords.

I do not think Google adwords is the best tool out there... I have seen discrepancies in the data from Wordtracker and Keyworddiscovery. It is a good idea to use various tools before choosing the right phrases.

Once we have decided with the website category/subject selection then we may need to do some research on the competition that our selected category have. Try to find some competitor websites and use them in Google Adwords keyword tool to get some keywords suggestions. This is the way which i am using to research the keywords.
