    I would suggest a good knowledge of the basic and common languages. For making money though,a lot of the standard and popular language work can be outsourced at a cheap rate.

    I would suggest looking into specialized systems/packages/languages. Check tech job placement agencies. They often list several systems and packages that large companies use. You can do really well as a consultant or for contract work. Something SAP, maybe CNC. I've seen some good rates for mainframe developers.

    I'm drawing a blank right now for packages/languages but its easy to research by checking the placement companies.

    C# and other .NET languages, JAVA.

    Some knowledge of the C/C++ is always good. (C is gradually phasing out).
