What have people found to be the best social sites for free backlinks? Do any of these backlinks make much difference to PR or ranking?

I tried Stumbleupon earlier today but you seem to have to pay for this and I'm afraid our budget just isn't there. I've used Hubpages in the past and this has shown up in the Google Webmaster Tools links but would like to know of any others.

My social bookmark (SoLinkable - in my sig) also offers some nice link building perks in addition to the usual dofollow Reddit/Digg link submissions. Basically, the top contributors have their site advertised in the sidebar. However if you're just looking for a quick social bookmarking link, you can do that too ;)

Many thanks for your answers. Have read your sites. And thankyou for mentioning Digg and Reddit.

River - your site mentions ZigiMe - does this give me the ability to add links (free links) to my website that Google will pick up? I had a quick look at it but wasn't sure from the info that it gave.

Sultanofseo - many thanks for the suggestions. I see from your signature that you know a lot about Squidoo. Have you found social bookmark sites to be worthwhile as far as backlinks are concerned? Does Google rank them higher / lower than forum links? Or is it important to get links from a broad spectrum of sites?

    Hi JJ
I would suggest that you download a free ebook called web 2.0 blackbook by a guy called Jack Humphrey. In this book you will find a list of all web 2.0 sites, check the various sites for their PR and try to get links from those with the highest PR.

If you can't be bothered check this site www.go2web20.net for the complete list.

Also try to get links from article directories like EzineArticles.com , GoArticles.com, ArticleCity.com, etc, that way you not only get backlinks, but also free traffic (make sure you include a link to your site in your signature).

See DMOZ.org for free directories where you can submit your site for free inclusion.

Many sites are fine for backlinks, what you do is pick one and start using it, then move on to a second and third, etc. Stop asking questions and start builidng links :)
