Backlinks that are "RELATED" to your website content and are mature sites (1 year+ running) with atleast PR2 (pr2 is my qaulification).

Web Directories & Article Submission websites should be avoided, I personally never had to use them to rank 1st page on my competitive keywords. They take away from your time that could be used building content or building quality backlinks with sites related to yours.

I'm pretty sure that I'm going to get shot by other SEOs for saying this, but here goes. Seeking relevant backlinks for a website is BS. Google will give your website backlink credits based upon the merits of the giving website. I have not seen one #1 ranking website in the Majors with backlinks that are purely theme specific. Once a a targeted website has reached 1000 backlinks, the relevancy of future backlinks will ceased to make a difference.

Over a unspecified period, Google will valued and devalued a webpage based upon it's current behavior. PR 4 today could decreased to a PR 2 and then back again to a PR 4. Consequently, the merits of that webpage will increased and decreased accordingly. The targeted website could also fluctuate as of a result of it's shifting backlinks.

Lastly, non-relevant and relevant one way links could dramatically increase the ranking of ANY website in all of the search engines. Go get one way links.

    Ready!
    Aim!
    FIRE!

    :D

Trust me, relevant one-way backlinks give much more weight than non-relevant, non-relevant still give weight, but you can move up much faster only getting linked to from relevant sites.

From my limited experience the ease of getting links from quality forums to your website makes them worth a lot more than trying to get into some of the directories (I'm still waiting on DMOZ!)

I think one way link from related sites are most helpful to improved SERP. And second is links from quality directories.

While I usually agree with the stuff your saying ssandecki I don't think this is one of those times.

Yes directory submissions are a bit time consuming for little payoff but article submissions are very useful. Google is so poor at categorising sites, especially when they overlap industries that I think it's enough to have a link in related content, not just a related site. This means if you spend some time and write a few good articles you can get some decent relevancy backlinks to your site for free.

Of course they are not as good as having a link from full site full of relevant content but they are better than spending your time on some of the other SEO "tactics" that I see mentioned on here.

Links from the BBC, CNN, Google, Apple, Adobe etc etc ;)

Seriously though, crappy link directories splog postings and links page links aren't going to do much aside from make your link profile look pretty spammy.

You should be working on getting links from the better (authority) sites within your niche.

Of course it's not, which is what makes them so highly prized. Of the past few months I've managed to pick up links from magazines like FHM, Glamour, The Daily Mail, and Smashing Magazine amongst others. It's these links that make a big difference - as you rightly say, they're so hard to get.

Are you saying that links gained from the resource box in articles are not valuable to your search results or do you mean site ranking?

What about the direct traffic that converts above 30%?

What about the links from other publishers that pick up your article?

For me the ideal (when looking to rise in SERPs) is a dedicated web page which described your service and with a link to the website and if possible to some inner pages of the site as well.
Then, the higher the page rank the best it is to make you rise in SERP.

Then, if you are seeking mostly targeted trafic, I would go for a site with high trafic and dealing with the same audiance, so that visitors are more likely to be interested in clicking on the link towards you.

To me, web directories (excpet a few exceptions) are quite poor in terme of Time spent to be listed on many directories / results.
I get listed on a few good ones at the beginning to get started then I only seek quality links on websites related to my service

    to be debated :)
