You dont surf the internet faster. VPN is like a proxy, it changes your IP, but its much more secure

A VPN is not like a proxy. It does not change your IP. You get a new IP on top of your existing IP assigned on your NIC. A VPN is typically an IPSEC Tunnel providing encryption to both the payload and transport layer. It is only secured in a sense that people (hacker) cannot easily intercept your packets and decode the data you are sending out. It does nothing to protect you from viruses, spyware, phishing, etc. VPN is typically used to send sensitive information across the Internet between private companies or employees accessing confidential company information from their home. Google it my friend.

When you make a VPN connection from anywhere in the world to the Geophysical Institute, your network connection is brought inside the GI Firewall and you have almost unlimited run of the GI network. You must have a username and password to access the GI VPN. A proper username and password provide some assurance to the GI network that you are actually associated with the GI and should be allowed access to network resources.

The benefit of VPNing into the GI is that your network connection is securely brought inside the GI network. You can make a VPN connection from nearly any place in the world. All your network traffic through the VPN connection is encrypted and (hopefully) undecipherable to anyone sniffing network traffic between your computer and the Institute's VPN Concentrator. The VPN connection brings you inside the GI and the firewall, virtually, giving you nearly the same level of access to network devices as if you were sitting at a desk in the Elvey building.

A Virtual Private Network (VPN) allows offices located in different locations to safely network with each other. A couple of the reasons for this is to access servers or printers. All a VPN does, it creates an encrypted tunnel between different computers, or firewalls over the internet.

Example 1: Lets say that bob needs to do data entry on a server located 200 miles away. The network administrator can create an encrypted gateway to gateway VPN so that bob can safely access the server.

Example 2: Lets say that Jill is working on a report that needs to be sent to another office. A VPN can be setup, and the printers shared so Jill can print directly from one office to the other.

If an employee needs to upload a sales list from his laptop to a server. They can use a software VPN to connect to the firewall, and then get access to the server.

The data sent over a VPN is encrypted so it can not be read. So even if someone is using a packet grabber, they will not be able to see that data. There are several levels of encryption, thus making it more difficult for people grabbing packets to read your data.

VPNs can be difficult to setup. Everything has to be just right between the devices - including shared key, encryption type, key number, is authentication through domain name or IP address. For security reasons, some VPNs only allow connections from certain IPs.

There are a lot of reasons why people use a VPN. The main reason is for security.

The speed that a VPN works is limited by the users connection speed. If you are using dial up, establishing a VPN connection to the office will not make your dial up as fast as a T1. It will still be dial up.

I use hotspot shield to watch hulu from outside the US and I can assure you that it definitely does not let you surf the internet faster. It slows my connection down to a crawl.
