You get backlinks and if the directory has a PR your site would get a PR update if you have many 'Good' backlinks. If the directory is active you get traffic from them also.

Let see whats the first natural tool of a new site webmaster ...

spam others blogs, begging for links, buying links, etc etc etc :D wrong

Directory submission was one of the first methods of making your site known. It's free and it does exactly what he tells : submit your link somewhere, in a place especially designed for this. Fair and square.

The benefits ... even they dont admit it, directory links still weights, not like 3 years ago but still ... considering the new tools available and the number of directories i can say cost/result is still the same. Cost decreased a lot (to have your link in directories), more links with much less power. Overall is not that bad.

Directory submissions defintiely work and increase your rankings. The key is to put your keyword in the business name or title textbox, not just your company name.

I've been asking the same sort of thing in a similar thread. I am wondering how many link dirs one would need to submit to before they started seeing hits from Google etc. And I'm looking for a list of the top link dirs a professional webmaster would start submitting a new site too they were working on. I'm finding many many hundreds of link dirs but I've also heard that you can just submit your site to a handful of link dirs that have a good pr and its almost as equal as submitting to many hundreds even thousands of link dirs so go figure. Hope to help and looking for help. Please add to the conversation.

One good directory can do it within a few days ...

You will see the back-links in yahoo with 24 hours and the site (if new) should get indexed by google within 2-3 days.
You should check to see in google serps if the directory is ranking high for the anchor text you used on that directory
usually (within a few days), if it is then the directory is strong and the link has been counted. ;)

I just did with a few new sites of ours and how i got my info

    thx

Directories which are cached and comes in search engine results are good for submission and they definitely increase the visibility of website through targeted keywords and give backlink for the website.

Being listed in a directory is a good way to help the SE's and also the general public get a better understanding of what category your website should fall under. If you have thousands of listings across thousands of websites under the category of entertainment -> football, the SE's will pick up on this and rank you more readily for those football terms (anchor text obviously has to be related). The url of the actual page you are listed on will contain the keywords you are targeting, as well as your anchor text. It is a highly relevant, permanent, one way link, which also helps build brand awareness when other self-respecting webmasters put in the time to submit their websites within the same category as you. Just like anything else though, a directory is only as good as the webmaster behind it.
