what are the advantages and disadvantages of subdomains?

I joined in a auto affiliate site builder. They provide sub domains for free of charge and domain for 12$/a . Could you please let me know, What are the advantages and disadvantages of using sub domains.

your url will be longer such as yourname.thatcompany.com instead of yourname.com. ..

Also prefer a own url instead of free sub-domain name.by own domain name you will look professional, will put good impression on ur visitor..will get E-mil IDs like

Even help in SEO.These days domain name are so cheap..If you dont have any money problem go for a .com

Also , you can buy domain name from anywhere and point to ur hosting using nameserver.

 

I suspect that if you use their subdomain you just get a 1 page template page. If you use your own domain it will be easier to brand, customize and add pages with your unique content...or does the domain just redirect to their subdomain page?
