Every time i make a post on wordpress, there is a field that allows me to enter tags. are these helpful in boosting your sites pagerank on google? i already have meta keywords and meta descriptions, so i left the tags field blank.

if i should fill it up, what should i be entering and is there a limit?

It's just another way to include some extra keywords which are closely related to your content.
To be honest I don't see that much difference in terms of SEO but many still use the tags. It doesn't hurt :)

Yeah exactly. This allows you to enter keywords specific to the post as opposed to your whole site

The SEO benefit is minimal if anything at all. Tags are used mostly for your users. For example, if you have an internet marketing blog you might have the following tags: seo, affiliate companies, ppc, google, yahoo, etc. A user searching any of these tags would be able to easily find related blog posts that you have written. You don't need to go crazy with tags, but I recommend that you put 3 or 4 tags that describe your blog post.

First of all, the meta tags section is only really used by a couple SE's (yahoo is one). Google just ignores them...tags are good for navigation if you use a tag cloud, its almost like a giant sitemap. Anyway, tags are nice on the post to do some internal kind of linking. TITLE tags are important- put your best keywords for the pages towards the front of the title. Also, the meta description can be used as your snippet on SE's and may have some affect on your ranking....wirting a good meta description is like writing a good PPC ad or something...need to work it
