I haven't had much success attracting real visitors to my blog/forum site with Twitter - just temporary spikes in bot activity. Are there particular Tweeting methods that people use to get more out of it?
The main thing is to only self promote sparingly, try to post lots of helpful and entertaining stuff in between posting links to your own stuff.
Thanks for the advice. I have LGBT forum/blog that is focused on personal advice and political issues. The only time I self-promote (once every few months) is to advertise for bloggers. I will try the celebrity name tactic. Ellen is a feature of a recent blog article.
Find people tweeting about your niche and follow them. They usually follow back. Try building relationships with them, they will usually help you out with retweets and #FF's etc
Building relationships is definitely key to success on Twitter. Get in a rhythm of promoting/sharing others' content more than your own, and commenting on posts that you liked. Taking the time to come up with a special twitter headline is usually better than just hitting your tweet button or using some auto-post service. It's also good to leave some characters at the end so people can more easily retweet. And be sure to have convenient sharing buttons on all of your posts as well, so more people will be encouraged to share your posts. Starting Twitter lists and adding other bloggers in your niche is a gesture that is frequently reciprocated, and can get you more attention from those people. Finally, your Twitter bio needs to be concise and really engaging so that people who stumble onto your profile will just have to follow you.
I'll agree with ajwalsh. You can do some research online on effective Tweets to send. This would fall into the realm of copywriting because you want to get people's attention so that they click. Also work on building relationships and being helpful/friendly.fun. This takes time but in the marketing world reputation is everything.
In twitter, you must have a good and catchy tweets in order that your followers will visit your links. Try to use hashtag in tweeting. And you need to build a relationship to other tweeters through interaction. Replying to their tweets and retweet their tweets can be a way to interact with them.
You need to engage with other people in the same niche as yourself - if you don't then no one will pay much attention to your tweets.
