What are Pros and Cons of sub-domains for SEO

If I want to launch a new set of services related to those I already offer on one of my sites, should I use a domain or a sub-domain?

Are there any downsides of using a sub-domain in terms of trying to get good SERPS?

Would a sub-domain get treated more favourably sooner than a separate domain?

You can use a sub domain or a new domain. Its up to you.

The search results ranking depends on the number of back links that you have.

A subdomain is just like a separate domain. You'd have to be willing to promote it just as much as the root domain it was based off of, because they're 2 separate entities.

    Thanks people for the info.

I had heard there was (at least anecdotal) evidence that sub domains escaped the sandbox sooner - if the sandbox exists.

I have had really bad luck ranking well for sub-domains. I avoid them like the plague now.

Any reason not to just add new sections to your existing site?

    eg yoursite.com/newservice1 yoursite.com/newservice2 etc.

I'm still thinking this point through really. My main site sells products, I want a spin off that offers custom design services. My feeling is that they don't sit too well on one site.

Google treat sub domain as a separate domain, but at the same time, just to get influence in SERP's you cannot have sub domain since Google started just displaying two results from the domain including sub domain.

    great info.

I have a question related to the above as well.

HERE is a friend's website. I am going to put up a very similar site. I wanted to add a blog to the top buttons, after "contact us"

    Questions:

    1. If the main site is Drupal platform ( or something else), can I add the Wordpress blog to it like this: blog.mysite.com?
    2. Adding a blog to the main site is to get indexed faster and also more pages in search engines. When I start building links, should I target mysite.com or blog.mysite.com?

    Thank You in advance
