How do you differentiate between good and bad links for SEO? I heard some people saying that you shouldn't just slap your link on any page because it can actually harm your site.

I can tell you what kind of links are the best for SEO purposes.

    Think of backlinks as recommendations.

Low OBL, which stands for Outbound Links....you want a page without too many outbound links to other sites....as the "link juice" diminishes with every additional link. So a page that links to a few people is seen as better than a page that is "easy" that links to anyone.

High PR....the higher the PR the better as Google higher credence to pages with authority....think of it this way....getting a recommendation from your parents is good, one from your priest/rabbi/minister is better, even better is your mayor, but one from the governor is better.....but hell a recommendation from the President....get the idea....so higher up the PR food chain is better.

A link from a page that is about your niche is great. If you have a website about onions, another website about onions seems natural and would be helpful....however a site about car washes....well a link is a link of course.....but that one isn't going to help you very much.

Finally, you want a do-follow link.....which means that website is vouching for you.....basically they are saying you have a good site and that they trust you....no-follow means...yeah will give you a link but we don't know you.

So to recap.....you want low OBL, high PR in topic links that are do-follow....get enough of those and you will be sitting pretty on the first page of Google.

    Good luck!

Good links can come from social, web and user communities the seo expert targets by specifically submitting the website/ content to these websites manually.A bad link can be defined as a link that comes from a source that has little or no content, is not popular, is involved in black hat seo, link exchanges, and is basically trying to deceive the search engines and the users into believing it to be of some value.

in search engines eyes, relevant links (from non-spammy sites) has greater value than non-related ones. so basically, its a good type of link

Deep links are much better compared to a page dedicated to backlinks.
