What are common advertising rates??

I'm about to launch an travel site and in the future I would like to have a few ads from hotels, bed and breakfasts, tour operators etc. The only thing is I don't really know what the going rates for advertising are. The site will be on Brazil and will be more towards the low to middle end of the market.

I'd appreciate any information on what sort of rates are charged per 100 000 page views (or unique visitors or whatever) for ads or any suggestions from those who have experience in this (what to do, what to avoid).

    Thanks in advance,

    Gavin

You wont get much, if anything, for a new site.
Rates usually depend on your traffic stats/PR/search engine ranking etc.

I know that a new site won't get a lot of traffic to begin with and I'm not really looking at having advertising on my site straight away. I'll consider advertising once the site is established and has consistent trafffic or if someone approaches me. All I want to know what common advertising rates and conventions.

I will attempt to answer your question.

There are a few ways to do it-

CPM is a common way and is based on 1000 impressions of there ad on your site. In my experiences I find this price to be around 1-2$ per 1k impressions. This would be reguardless of clicks.

CPC - cost per click- basically you keep track of clicks on a persons ad. Usually cpc goes for 20-30 cents per click from rates I have seen advertised.

I have also heard of people using a higher rate of $5 per thousand page views. I think it depends on the industry and the cost of goods being advertised.

Have you thought about joining an affiliate program or direct advertising through Yahoo Advertising and/or Google Adwords?

Yeah I plan on using Adwords but I figured in the long run if advertisers want to go directly to me then this would be better than having Google take their cut. The website is being designed with space for google adwords and other advertising.

I thought I might set up channels in adwords for each main section and then calculate my own ad rates from this. For example if I was getting 1.5% CTR and 10c earnings per click from google then I'd calculate a set monthly fee based on this. Maybe charging 15c to private advertisers. Its all a bit hypothetical at the moment.

$5 per thousand views is nice but I'll be at the budget end of the travel market so this would probably be setting myself up for disappointment. Might be applicable to the pages where I discuss international plane tickets though.

If you're curious the website will be similar to this.

As for yahoo, I'm in Australia so this isn't really an option at the moment since I've heard it's for the US only.

I am far from an expert at this, but I set up a small page up for advertising and basically left the amounts up for debate. I have 125x125 ads available from $25, and also let it be known that I have space for 468x60 and text ads.

I actually just set this page up today, and it is nothing fancy, so who knows what it will get me. http://www.sportsoutlaw.com/advertise.html

The current ads I have running on my home page are adsense, 2 CJ ads, and 4 text link ads. The text link ads are at the bottom of my page and net me right at $100 per month. I could get more for those 4 ads, but 2 of them got in when I first opened up text link ads on the site and they got in extremely cheap.

Ultimately it depends on your traffic and your targeted audience.

When I announced I had some ad space open here some folks told me I was crazy and I would never get that amount, blah blah, PR, I don't make that much sitewide, etc.

Here is a page with some of my pricing and available advertising.

I have no problems selling my space for these prices even though I been told differently by plenty of "experts" here at DP.

So the "Free NFL picks", "Go Tickets" are examples of static text links? When I clicked on the example it just seem reopend the same page.

For banner ads it says that it is $1000 USD per banner with up to 10 banners in total. So theorectically if one company wanted to advertise without competition they would have to pay 10 000?

My last query relates to clarifying "the US average of 39 CPM". Is this $39 per thousand impression and does impressions equate to pageviews? Where does this average figure come from? Is it just something that everybody knows or are these figures published somewhere?

Thanks for your input. Getting a few different opinions on rates helps me to form reference points. Previously I was just relying on my own uniformed guess.
