The canonical tag is an very impoartant tool in the search engine optimization toolbox. It is often a better solution that a 301 redirect in cleaning up duplicate content issues.

It is used to tell Google that the website with w w w and without w w w are the same and not different.

We put this code in your web source code between the <head> and </head> tags.

If a site indexed with www and without www then Google consider it as two different sites and duplicate.
To solve this canonical tags put in header tag of a site coding.
    Canonical tag is : <link rel="canonical" href="http://www.example.com"/>

I think With the acceptance of the canonical tag by the “big dogs” in the search engine game, information for implementing it are now readily available on the World Wide Web.

Canonical tags are somehow similar to 301 since you're telling the engines that multiple pages should be considered as one without actually redirecting visitors to the new url.

With the acceptance of the canonical tag by the “big dogs” in the search engine game, information for implementing it are now readily available on the World Wide Web. As always, some sources are more reliable than others and the quality and quantity of information varies widely from one resource to the next. In the list below we’ve tried to assemble a few resources with information we think will be of value.

With canonical tag you can choose www or non www of your website/domain. It is necessary because if your website is visible with www and non www, Google will consider it as two pages.

The Canonical URL tag attribute is similar in many ways to a 301 redirect from an SEO perspective. In essence, you're telling the engines that multiple pages should be considered as one, without actually redirecting visitors to the new URL.
