A press release in it's most simplistic terms is when you have something newsworthy you release a statement to the press. They then take a look and if they also think it is newsworthy they may publish something in one of the magazines or newspapers.

Obviously issuing a press release online has many benefits, building back links, traffic from search engines and blogs that are using RSS feeds, etc.

There are a lot of factors here, but for some businesses it is a reat tool and for other not so much. The better paid services are good about getting the PR placed properly, while the free services require a bit more time and are more like hit or misses.

I think the key is having something newsworthy, and then focusing on a few quality release vs. flooding the market with trash.

    From our FAQ page:

    Press Release Services FAQ's

    Q. What if I do not have anything newsworthy to say?

    A. It is your business. Anything you have to provide, whether it is goods or services, is going to be news to someone.

    Q. When should I submit a press release?

    A. Whenever you have a new product available, a promotion of one of your employees to a new position, a limited time offer, or just to remind people of your existence is a good excuse for a press release.

    Q. Why utilize press releases? Will people even care that Joe is our new CFO?

    A. Press releases are great link building tools. You receive a one way incoming link from multiple sites with good reputations with the search engines. You can include anchor text and the keywords you are trying to rank for. This is a lot more valuable than doing a simple link trade or submitting to a directory.

    Q. How often should I put out a press release?

    A. Ideally, we recommend once a month. This will vary depending on your site and needs.

    Q. How long should my press release be?

    A. We recommend at least 300 words to a maximum of 500 words.

BTW...there's a TON of other information on that site concerning marketing. And they're one of the few people who really try to give accurate advice to marketers and back it up with numbers.
