it's best to go for manual directory submissions because you get to filter and track your results properly. I currently do manual directory submissions targeting specific niche directories, top directories, and dmoz. :D

automated submissions will not give you the amount of submissions you hope for. for example, if you submit to 500 sites with automated tool, out of those 500 directories, some will require captcha verification so those submissions will not go throu. you will need to select the proper categories as well and automated tool often wil end up submitting to wrong categories which later on will get rejected. best way is manual

I think directory submission links does not give you more credits. it also effects your site. Some times google will consider some sites as spam.So automatic directory submission is just waste of time .

dir. submission really helps, but sometimes google can consider it as a spamm if it's automated submission, You should use some tools ex. autofill or like that, it just makes your job easier. The best way is to do manual submission with the help of tools. :)

Manual directory submission is also more natural in the eyes of SEs...

If you can automate something and replicate it in the eyes of all of the directories as being "manual", then that's equivelant to the submission being "manual" in both the SE's eyes, and the directories eyes.

The problem with automatic submission to directories is that most of the time the submission service fails to replicate that "manual" aspect successfully.

There are not any good effects thats why people say that you should not choose auto submission.

According to me you can not get more than 1% submission with auto submission.

Think always about manual submission and try to avoid auto submission.

    Thanks

There is no bad effects of automated directory submissions however, softwares are not 100% reliable and it could not guarantee that your website will be submitted in all the directories. So I personally suggest you to do dir submission manually for better results..:)

Google can trace automatic submissions to the websites and can ban them either permanently or long time!

However,A hand operated directory submission software program is unique from any other automated directory submission softwares . This software program is attainable under $200 and you use it at your own pace. What makes it so easy is that you enter most of your basic information including details about your site and it stores it for you. YOU can see how the search engine is rated and pick out ones that are worth more than a puff of smoke. To stop the automated machines they post a human read code on the submission page and require you to register. They almost immediately email you back a back a verify link you must press.

Usually the directories involved included in automation software are full of loads of spammy sites, so the links you get would be more or less worthless, so the bad effects are u would waste a lot of ur own time for very few back links in the end !

Bad effects of automatic submission are:
    - wrong categories
    - simmilar descriptions
    - moderators will reject your submission from quality directories, if you're using software to add your site
    - your site can be added to link farms

It isn't that it is bad, it is more a problem of reliability for marketing if that is your goal. I tried a few automated bookmarking submission tools and they were not reliable. Even it they did submit your data, there still might be other required action. For example, some bookmarking sites require that you make the bookmark public after submission. It would do you no good to have private bookmarks if you are using bookmarks for marketing (you want them to be public). Most automation tools do not take all criteria into consideration and fail at properly setting up your bookmarks for marketing, if that is your goal.

I agree with a lot of what everyone is say. But some services don't have problems with submitting because they are submitting into their own network of blogs - directories. Of course I am biased, but I believe my system works well. :)

the submission when it's done, there is no deference if it's manual or automated, (and no one or nothing can see the deference)
the only question is "is it done?"
by manual submisiion and simi automated you can be sure that your link was submited, and you can confirm the submission but with automated submission, you have no idea if the software had really submitted your site or not.
also the vitrification code (CAPTCHA) no automated software can fill it you will need to fill it manually

Semi-automatic directory submission software is available for free and from my experience it works great. Try the digixmas directory submitter as I think you will love it and it's free.
