I have posted some essays and poems in blogger.com (http://dhanabalakrishnan.blogspot.com). I would like to clarify whether the copyright for the posted ones lies with the hosting site (like blogger) or with me. Also, suggest me ways, if any, to protect my writings from plagiarism with copyright on my own. thanks in advance
the copyright always is with the author unless you have a contract in writing where you cease the copyright to another party. the copyright NEVER is with a hosting company by default. there is no real way to protect copyright. the law protects copyright on international level - however in modern times of easy money making there are thousands or millions of thieves out there doing nothing else but to steal content for MFA sites. I have thousands of pages unique content and some 10'000+ self created images and have the very same situation - lots of stolen pics and text out there. all you can do is to either waste YOUR valuable time and have some of those copyright thieves' sites shut down - or just live with it knowing well that those too weak to create on their own also are too weak to be successful in web publishing stolen content. hence they may use your content but never enjoy success.
My understanding is this (I am not a lawyer): Your work is automatically protected in the United States as soon as it's made public (I don't know about the rest of the world.) If you want to protect your work, you can register it with the U.S. Copyright office at www.copyright.gov. Registering it (US$35 for an online work) allows you to *sue* anyone who uses your work. The automatic copyright only allows you to tell someone to cease and desist using your work - but doesn't allow you to sue them if they keep using it anyway. NOTE: I am *not* a lawyer and what I've said here does not constitute legal advice in any kind of way.
