Duplicate Images a re definitely a factor which might affect your rankings.

I'd suggest you credit the original image author while adding the image because even the original authors can complain against duplication if they find you reproducing their images without credit and that could be a big problem.

Google can't see images so you could have a thousand the same (not recommended), just make sure each has an Alt tag and that you do not spam by always using the same Alt tag.

    You can use this tool
    http://www.mindgems.com/products/VS-Duplicate-Image-Finder/VSDIF-About.htm

Visual Similarity Duplicate Image Finder will find all similar and duplicate images in a folder and its sub folders. It uses advanced algorithms in order to find similar images in a way that a human does. Due to that fact it can find similar images even if they are in different image formats and sizes.

Works extremely fast and acurate compared to others.

    Modify your image.
Change the dimensions, title name, alt tags and there you have it no duplicate image.

I agree with Drabdcesign, Google can't read images so you don't have to worry about the duplicate images problem.
