What about backlinks to a file on your site vs page of your site

Are backlinks to a download you offer on your site, such as .zip .exe or .jar as good for seo as normal backlinks that point to home page or other page?

ie. what is the difference between these two backlinks in terms of seo:

    domain.com/download.zip
    domain.com/page.html

    Thanks

Usually files are not found through search engines. So you won't get a lot of powers with backlinks to files. Also the pages can give linkjuices to other pages through internal linking.

if page.html contains some other links on other pages of your site the "link juice" get distributed to those pages.
since the zip file content is not indexed the "link juice" not get distributed anywhere, neither it will show on the search results so it is a wasted link for SEO purposes

If the link does not make a visitor land on your page, I guess it does not help you much in your SEO efforts. The download link will only give your visitor one time access to download but not bring him on to your site and so I guess... such link would not be any helpful. :(
