My best friend and I used to hunt squirrels when we were kids. We would shoot and field dress them. His mother would turn our booty into squirrel stew. It was good. My mother would not eat chicken, for the most part, because of seeing her mother kill them on the farm. I have been to a slaughterhouse. The smell was bad but watching the animals being butchered did not really bother me.
I guess Paul McCartney should have said, "If slaughterhouses had glass walls, AT LEAST SOME PEOPLE would be a vegetarian." Perhaps he was looking at the world ONLY through his own glasses.
LOL...good point. I take my responsibility as a member of an omnivorous species quite seriously. I feel that it is my solemn duty to eat everything that is edible: plant, animal, mineral, etc. Harvesting (whether it is reaping wheat, slaughtering beef, or mining salt) is part of the equation, of course.
Of course I saw animals being slaughtered. And no, I wasn't joking, although it did kind of sound like a joke. When I was a kid, we had a small hog farm (4-5 sows plus a bunch of babies). I helped my dad butcher the sows around the time I was 6-7. I am with @jrbiz I feel like we shouldn't be disgusted by something that is placed there for us to enjoy (i.e. meat of various animals). I tried to live a vegetarian life-style around the age of 22-24 and I never felt more miserable healthwise in my entire life (I never had enough energy to do or finish anything. Even walking was like a chore). But to each its own. I gather you're a vegetarian?
Nope. I eat chicken, fish and lamb among non-veg foods but I don't think I will ever be able to stand the sight of these animals being butchered.
In retrospect, I probably should have put some constraints on my previous statement about eating edible things...
so mine was not easy to remine but for good i did not eat it it was a dog,,somebody try to sell me cooked dog meat deviled as goat meat,,,..lol
I bet your family members must be getting to watch a daily?/weekly?/bi-weekly? …. whatever episode of 'Bizzare Foods with farenheit000' on Home channel.
Next week's episode will be--"Did that thing that looks like a potato just wink at me, farenheit000?"
Snake sounds disgusting! The weirdest thing I've ever eaten is octopus, and it was surprisingly nice.
I have had pickled octopus served cold as part of a larger salad and it was great. I have supposedly had rattlesnake sausage, but it could have been anything as it simply tasted like some sort of sausage. I was re-reading some of the thread and I saw your post. I have eaten goat and it was really good. I have to admit being ambivalent about eating a dog, though I likely would try it, if offered.
I ate snake here and dog here in the US, durian in bali, scorpions in thailand and ballut (sp?) in the phillipines.
The weirdest thing I ever tried, hmmm I guess it were Bulls balls Sounds sickeningly but it was not so bad.
Ah, the infamous "prairie oysters"!! Have never had or seen them, but it would be an interesting food to try.
