Weird number of visitor peaks?

I have noticed the last couple of days that my server cant seem to handle the traffic my website is generating. In order to find out what was and is cuasing this i had a look at my log files and noticed that i have weird visitor peaks on my website. For certain keywords i suddenly rank number one on Google's search engine and it then boosts my number of visitors, which eventually causes my server to go down. These keywords are really competitive. Any idea? Maybe some flux of google?

I would start by buying some more bandwidth. You first have to ensure you can handle the traffic then its time to evaluate.

Have you been doing any SEO?
Are you part of the Coop Network?
Were you recently featured on a big site (like coolsiteoftheday)?

I could write questions all day long.

Im going to switch host within now and a week. I have already transfered my DB to a new host. I aint complaining about my current host. 6000 to 7000 uniques on a shared server isnt bad i think, correct me if im wrong. ;) My site is now about 4 to 5 years old and yes it is part of the coop for a couple of months now. I havnt been featured on any site, not that im aware of of but with these numbers of visitors i probably will be soon. :D

I was thinking that maybe the peaks of high number of visitors is a glitch of the next update or change in serps.
