Does anyone use the url filter for competitors/low paying ads? I know what my highest paying ads are from the adwords tools and started weeding out url to sites that arn't directly related or that I know have a very low minimum cpc. Anyone else tried this?
Not a bad idea. But note the same ad may appear for different keywords but with different payout. Dont eliminate entire sites just coz of 1 low paying ad. I have never tried it, so cant say much .The pages that I have adsense on, are optimized for keywords getting 100s of ads . To get the top ads I ld have to eliminate 95 sites ...
I wouldn't try to use filters for this. Google knows the CTR and CPC of all the ads. They know which ads will make the most on your site. It would be impossible to try and out-guess their algorithms. If your having problems getting relevant ads, use better on-page SEO techniques and section targeting instead.
Well in the end I figured it out. I wrote a php statement which displays less/omitts ad blocks for pages with certain subjects.
If you filter out an ad on a page because you think it is low-paying, AdSense is only going to show even lower paying ads in its place. During any given page view, it is going to show the ads that will make the most money... after all, they are in the business of making the most money too Also keep in mind that many advertisers run hundreds if not thousands of ads. Blocking one that you think is low paying could theoretically be blocking many more ads that the advertiser is also running. These could include some of your highest paying ads since most advertisers bid different amounts based on the specific keywords. Blocking ads because you believe they are "low paying" is one of the worst things you can do to your AdSense account's earnings, IMO.
Im not sure whether it is necessary to weed out the low paying ads. Didnt Adsense just recently changed their delivery of ads. The best performing ads only. Read it yourself:
I've only ever used the url filter to weed out ads that are irrelevant or uninteresting. Whats the point in an ad that pays $0.05 more if no-one clicks on it? Since I spent more time optimizing the page content and Google started Smart Pricing I haven't had to use it at all Cheers BP
Thanks for the input... I'm not blocking any urls - just putting less ad blocks for certain subjects where there weren't enough ads to fill all the blocks on a page.
The one and only When it comes to blocking ads, I only block my own Adwords ads, a few direct competitor's ads, and one ad that while it is targeted to the theme of the site, it is not targeted to my specific audience (a very male oriented ad on a female oriented site of the same subject). I have 7 URLs total on my filter list.
today i had to block a female impersonator website that was using adwords advertising... google was waaay off target in putting that garbage on my site... i don't care what it paid, lol. i also had to block an adwords advertiser that was using keywords in ads that were relevant to my site, but totally irrelevant to the content of the website being advertised... the advertiser was using blatant deception to drive irrelevant, untargeted traffic to their site. i run niche sites that i don't believe should have to cater to that sort of stuff... so my list of banned sites is a bit long.
Same here, I have a few blocked where the topic text of the add is relevant, but the website and description is something totally different (dating sites). None of my visitors ever clicks those, so even if they pay more, they are just taking up add space.
Having such an ad actually acts to your advantage.... coz the users will be coming back to your site and look for something else
He just said that no one would click on those ads. I must have over 60 blocked ads... problem with most of them is that the advertiser used too broad keywords, so I end up with ads that don't really have anything to do with my site, But some are just ridiculous, I was even getting ads on Spanish on one of my sites! However, I just block ads that are not relevant to my site, I don't try to "weed out" low paying ads, like Jenstar said that is just a really dumb thing to do
Google keeps optimizing the ad shows on your site. If an ad is not making money for your site then Google will lower the placement position of it.
Well it had been running for a week with no clicks (I track them), whereas the lower placed ads got lots. The title of the add was relevant to the subject (Drawings), but the description is shown too and that was sometimes stuff like "Meet hot singles yada yada" and once the description was something to the like of "meet hot fat bikini lady". I have nothing against larger woman, I'm not exactly fit myself, but I do care about the visitors and I'd like to think I'm serving them ads that are relevant to the subject and of a certain standard.
