Generally speaking, am I at a disadvantage if I have a website as opposed to a blog, as far a SEO goes? In other words do search engines like blogs better than websites all things being equal?
Well, it all depends on the blog software - and websites you can build to be as SEO friendly as blogs. It all depends on your content and ability to build links.
Good job asking, unfortunately most people who don't know what they're talking about will say blog. Here is the thing, if you want good results, you need to optimize whether you have a blog or a website. You are NOT at a disadvantage. Search engines do NOT favor blogs. Search engines favor relevant and fresh content. If your website has fresh content, you will be fine!
Relevant and explosive content. They want content that is great for those particular results and users.
Blog is very easy to optimize because people like to read some unique content or info from blogs and blog update on daily basis while web content remain same for a long time or for a 5 months.
Well they both have their own pros and cons. Blogs may it be of blogger/blogspot or of wordpress are already optimized in seo purposes, where as you have to make a website properly optimized. In website you can do proper on-page optimization but in blogs which is not possible. It its all what you want, seo is same for both.
I would say blogs given the fact they're not static with a daily update basis they will rank better i guess that if you do this with a website they will do as good as a blog would. I prefer blogs.. im pushing one side only lol. Sites are as good in seo as blogs, but I prefer blogs, easier to update and people tend to follow a blog and don't follow a static website, unless of course updating it constantly (more work to do)

Both are good to optimize..just you need to post quality content ..in your blog/site. Both will give you the same results ....
Both works fine and both have their own advantages. Blogs (specially WordPress blogs) are considered to have the cleanest code (backend code) from Google and that is what Google likes too; clean code so that it can crawl around easily within the site. So if your website has a clean code and is optimized properly, there's no need to go for any pre-made blog or CMS. You can get the results from your website as long as it is optimized and coded properly. Regarding fresh content, you can add it in your website as well instead of setting up a blog specifically for this purpose. BUT as the CMS/WordPress thingy is pretty simple to manage, it works for most of the people. Hope it helps.
blogger has limitation because it is predefined content management system . and for website seo has more options .
If you use wordpress for your website, Its best for your SEO strategies because Its totally SEO friendly.
