Website taking 30 seconds to load, hurting SEO ranking...

Hi everyone, I apologize if this is the wrong spot to post this. My website takes 30+ seconds to load on desktop and mobile. My SEO rank for my main keyword is putting us in position 14. For my industry it is critical that I rank on the first page organically.

I paid to have someone speed up my site a few months ago but it is taking a very long time to load the homepage and any other pages for some reason. I am not a professional web developer. My website does have a pro that works on back end stuff like security and some database development though.

I am desperate for some help to speed up my site. Any suggestions would be appreciated beyond my ability to convey over a forum post.

 

It took longer than 30 seconds for me. Disable all the plugins you do not have to use. Your site has to make dozens of "handshakes" before it can start displaying the contents. This is an utter insanity:

Is there a reason why you need to use all those plugins and includes?

Disable them one by one to see which one of them slows your site down. Then figure out a way to run the site without those plugins, add-ons, javascripts.

 

Thanks for the reply. From the look of them most of those plugins are from the Avada Wordpress Theme that I use to build and maintain the site. I assume if I start disabling them everything would just break?

Warning, I'm not going to sugar coat this. I'm going to give you the truth. If you can't handle the truth, just stop reading now.

There are many factors that impact both page speed, and on-page SEO. It has been my experience that the train wreck laundry list of how NOT to build a website that are ... well... every blasted turdpress template I've ever seen screws site owners over in this regard. In your case this is exacerbated even further by the outright "triple i" of web development your site was constructed with. What's the triple i? Ignorance, incompetence, and ineptitude. Endless pointless garbage has been blindly copied into the site with no regard for semantics, accessibility, or bandwidth, making it plainly clear whoever built the site for you has ZERO business building websites!

It's not just that it loads slow, it loads slow whilst showing NOTHING. This likely isn't just screwing you on search, it's likely creating more "bounce" -- people abandoning the site before it even finishes loading because they think the server is down or the page is just broken.

That the page has so many scripts inside <head> where they block the load/display of content is a significant problem, and one common to the mental enfeeblement that is turdpress. Likewise the derpy frameworks of jQuery and bootcrap are equally bending you over the table.

I do think that your hosting is equally at fault. A waterfall projection of the page load shows almost four seconds before the initial HTML is even sent. This could be the fault of bad hosting, it could be the fault of bad coding in turdpress, or one of the many pointless extensions that's been added.

That the home page comes to 3.38 megabytes spanning 151 separate files bespeaks to that "3i" -- the file counts ALONE explain much of the delay as each file request "real world" past the first 8 should average 200ms, and for many users on choked out connections you could see a second or more. BEST CASE is 60ms, but you have to be damned near seated on top of the server to see anything that low. This overhead is caused by "handshaking" -- the browser and server talking to each-other. This means "normal" users can see that page take 28.8 seconds JUST for handshaking, and worst case you're looking at well over two minutes! JUST because it's so many separate files for no good reason.

That 1.58 MEGABYTES of that spanning 98 files is scripttardery on a page where I'm not seeing anything that should even BE scripted?!? Well, that's just going full Gungan. Meesa sayz yews nevah goes FULL Gungan. The site is then further pissed on by the ridiculous 855k of CSS in 11 files on a site that likely doesn't warrant -- for screen media -- more than 48k in ONE file.

Naturally the CSS woes are caused by that monument to "3i", bootcrap. If ever ignorance, incompetence, and ineptitude were enshrined as holy writ, bootcrap would be Deuteronomy. It takes every bad practice in development and tries to claim that it's somehow better, or easier, or simpler, and that's 100% certified BULLSHIT. It only looks easier to people who haven't learned enough HTML or CSS to have ANY damned business building websites.

Hence why the HTML itself is a disaster. Tags like <font> and <center> that have no business in any HTML written after 1997? Static style in the markup? Static scripting in the markup? Gibberish use of numbered headings and little to no semantics or logical document structure? Between the outright garbage technology choices and complete lack of knowing the most basic of HTML concepts, you've been set up for failure by charlatans. Scam artists. People who have ZERO business telling you how to build a website FOR business.

Hence the 96.6k of HTML to deliver 3.45k of plaintext and TWO content images? That's not even 9k of HTML's flipping job!!!

Between the HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, you have around 40 times the code needed to do the job, spread out over 44 times as many files as needed. That is an epic /FAIL/ at web development... but worse, that's just the tip of the iceberg.

Years ago Matt Cutts -- head of Google's anti-spam division at the time -- told us "Write for the user, not the search engine". That was some of the best advice ever as all the dirtbag SEO "tricks" are more likely to rank quickly, but then get you slapped down for abuse. In terms of "writing for the user" -- aka accessibility -- this page is also an epic failure. Again the lack of semantics and logical document structure harm it, but so do the illegible colour contrasts and general failure to meet even the most basic parts of WCAG minimums. The "web content accessibility guildelines" exist for a reason, and failing to follow them is asking to not just alienate users, but also by extension search since if you have a broken buggy inaccessible page, who the blazes is going to back-link to it?

Seriously, illegible white on cyan? white on light salmon? /FAIL/ at DESIGN. Lemme guess, you had some artist under the DELUSION they're a designer saddle you up as well? Don't get me started on the alignment errors, or that the PHP is currently throwing an error that screws up the fixed positioned menu... which is also an indication said fixed menu is shit coded.

If you brought this to me as a client, I would tell you to pitch the ENTIRE mess in the trash and to start over. WITHOUT turdpress, WITHOUT jQuery, WITHOUT bootcrap. With a focus on semantics, usability, and accessibility. 90%+ of your site appears to be static... code it that way, or at least semi-static so as to speed it up keeping the derpitude to a minimum... .because again to be brutally frank (when am I anything but?) what you have right now is putting the herp in the derp. 100% Carlos Menica Grey. (#DDD). There is little to nothing I would even TRY to salvage from that mess. Take it 'round back o' the woodshed with a .30-06 and put it down like Old Yeller.

See folks, THIS is a stunning example of why these off the shelf "frameworks" and CMS when used for business, do nothing other than screw the business owner. Not only looks horrible, but even though there must be content below the fold, there is NO WAY to scroll down to see it. Whoever stole your money and gave you this is a THIEF.

Based on this ONE page, I would NEVER EVER trust you to do anything for me. First impressions COUNT and this impression SCREAMS SCAM, SCAM, SCAM. What it tells me is that your company is SLOPPY. If your company is so INCOMPETENT that it cannot present the potential customer with decent webpages, then it follows that your company is too INCOMPETENT to take care of the customer before, during, and after the sale.

@deathshadow can do a better job telling you how to solve the issues, but in general most of the blame can be laid at the feet of whomever chose to use Turdpress, JQueery, Bootcrap, or whatever other CMS was used. Best bet is to find a REAL website coder, one who knows and understands HOW to build a website that BRINGS you customers rather than DRIVING them away. May or may not cost more up front but pays off HANDSOMELY in the long run.
