I use Publisher to do my webpages and find the graphics come up slow when you go onto the site. Are there other website building programs that will make the website faster?

    Notepad 2.

Code it and it'll load faster.

WISIWIG generators put tonnes of code in that isn't needed, they are really bad. I really want to make one that produces good minimalistic code.

If you are resizing large graphics to smaller sizes, then it will take long to load on a website because it uses code to specify the size of the image. Instead, resize the graphic in a photo editor then use that.

Save as web graphics (GIFs) in Photoshop... it is usually a lot smaller than standard JPGs coming from tools like Publisher.

Also, don't use tools like Publisher.. ;-)

That depends, validating often does help webpage speed as they are getting rid of code which isn't needed (thus making the document smaller which inturn helps website speed)

No. The major thing that helps a web page load faster is optimization of images and/or flash. You're talking about bytes, and I'm talking about kilobytes and/or megabytes.

You're saying validation makes people get rid of code which isn't needed, which in my experience isn't the case at all. Usually it's novice authors who forget their end tags, their quotes around attributes such as "selected", and forgetting to use character/numeric entities such as & in URIs and so forth and because of this they have to add the end tag, the extra attribute value with quotes, the "amp;", which result in more bytes (more code, larger file size).

If you don't think so, can you provide an example where an author reduces his file size by validating? (And no, I'm not talking about changing his approach to coding the web page -- from a table layout to css one... we're talking about validation.)

I agree that images and other media are the main concern when dealing with load times but I was merely saying that validation could mean a lower file size, in which case it would load faster. It just depends on the site.

No need to get all defensive about it :/

The best way to make a web site load fast, assuming it is on a fast server and fast connection is to leave all the crap out, ie., tons of images, flash, and other useless stuff.

Keep it simple.. Text loads the fastest.

Probely just the images are too big. Try using a diff file format or decrease the quality of the image

Microsoft Publisher is not regarded as a very good web design package, in fact Microsoft make some great software but their design and graphic packages have always been lacking, they are geeks not designers. Try using software from Adobe when it comes to design and graphics, they are the experts, leave MS to make OS & office software. Check out Fireworks from adobe for web graphic optimization.
