Website root or sub domain

    I would like to know what is better for users and webmasters

    When starting a new website that has more then one script is it better to use a sub domain or a root directory.

    Root: www.my-site.com/forum
    or
    sub domain: www.forum.mysite.com

    I want to make a website that has forum, directory and the main page.

    best one way forum.mysite.com, nothing else, www.my-site.com/forum is like a folder and a 1 level link to your main site
