Hi All I keep coming accross sites where grammatic errors and spelling mistakes are so pervasive that the only reason I know what they try to say is because of context. So, those that are that bad, i simply reject. Then there are those where the effect is not so limiting, yet spelling mistakes abound, and I get a fairly bad impression, My question is , do you my fellow directory owners/editors have a view on this. I know that the internet is an international community, English is not the first language for everyone, so should a directory that lays claim to being a quality , English only, human edited directory, reject sites on this basis Cheers P.S. My grammar an spelling isn't BBC standard either, yet I make an effort, perpetually editing even my forum posts to correct errors.
It best to try and keep as correct english grammar and spelling although we all know that in English many words are spelt different on both sides of the Atlantic But editing is always the preferred process option
I check carefully for speeling and grameeticul eroars and edit, of course as britishguy pointed out its important to remember the differences in spelling in place between US and UK english.
What do you mean by edit, I am not referring to site descriptions contained in the submission by the webmaster, I am referring to the website itself. One can edit the site description, but there isn't a whole lot that you can do about the website. For example, in theory, spelling mistakes an grammatical howlers are probably rare in a site that succeeds in processing a Dmoz listing. Anyway, tis one to think about. This is a business, yet the need for quality will often clash with the need for results. Cheers
i don't deliberately check the spelling of every word. I just read the contents and if there are many errors, i'm bound to discover it.... but i can live with a few errors as long as the content is good
Maybe because I'm running a niche directory I'm more fussy about quality, but if a submitted site is not one I would find useful - it gets deleted. Useful includes readability - some grammar/spelling boo-boo's I'll overlook, but if the site looks like something a small child would write - it's gone.
A few errors is not a problem, at times I have sent the owner a quick email about it - they were unaware of the spelling mistakes (we all do it at times). On sites that have many errors I usually won't accept them as it also reflects on your directory.
