I have always wondered if the footer of the website stating it is copyrighted really legally protects the website from anyone copying. Or is there a place where you can make your website illegal from copying. -Tony
By creating the content, it's automatically copyrighted to you-- regardless if the (C) sign is displayed or not.
There is no requirement for copyright notice on websites (or anywhere else). Your work is protected by copyright as soon as it's fixed in a tangible medium and published. The reason that people put copyright notice is to warn those people who aren't out to steal their content, but mistakenly believe that they're allowed to use content from other people's websites without permission if it doesn't say that the work is copyrighted. Will it keep someone intent on stealing your content from stealing it? Nope. But it's another nail in the proverbial coffin if you ever have to chase someone... Let me know if you have other questions.
