If you design a website for a US company and get paid for that, but you are living outside the US, what tax rules apply? Doesn anyone know or is there any website with info on this?
You would need to look into "services" taxes. I don't believe you are bound to pay any tax to the USA for income you make in Belgium even if your client is in the USA. Ask a CPA (accountant) or tax lawyer but I am fairly certain of this.
thanks! so actually i'd just have the Belgian tax rules apply. It would be the same as getting paid by a Belgian company for "national work"?
In some Euro countries if you do not have a registered web-design firm/agency/company/are under the contract, you do not pay tax, if a foreign company wanted you to do them web-design as an individual not a registered business owner, it's on them and how they justify to their investors why they deal with someone who is not a registered business, you are not company's employee so they don't need to pay domestic taxes for you as employers. If you have signed some contracts for that web-design services and you don't know what they may mean in legal terms, it's best to address questions to your local authorities in Belgium for straight answers.
