Website design contests

Discussion in 'HTML & Website Design' started by marty, May 12, 2005.

A few weeks ago I believe I read that people sometimes do website design contests on this forum.

    1. Is this true?
    2. If true how does it usually work?
    3. If true what's a good prize amount?

    Thank you...

    Marty

    Thanks Design Agent...

I know I am probably being very slow here, but can you please tell me which section I should start a contest thread in?

Not sure, I get in to trouble for that kind of thing.
Maybe general marketing, general business, buy/sell trade or possibly even this one. Infact you'll have to ask someone else.

    Hey Zeb,

    1. Do you know of an example of a previously organized contest?
    2. What's a good prize amount?

    Thanks,

    Marty

Sorry never participated in any contest before. As for as the prize is concerned, I would say something between $200 to $1000 will be good. B/W who is paying for the prize?

I have submitted a proposal to a local elementary school's PTA (Parent Teacher Association) to revamp their website. I mentioned that I had read about website design contests on this forum. The PTA leaders were very excited about the idea.

I told them I wasn't sure, but I had heard that $300 is a descent prize, but that I would research further.

All I would want is a flat JPG image.

My guess is that I would need to give the funds to some kind of middle man and that a winner would have to be announced by a certain date.

I would also ask the same question, what if someone were to create a site that is fully functional, you just want a screenshot?

All I would want is the design portion, I would build the HTML/PHP myself.

I will admit a PSD would be a lot better than a JPG, but as far as the contest is concerned I would guess that people would feel more comfortable submitting a JPG and then they win follow up with the PSD.

To sum up all I would be looking for is the creative design, not the implementation.

Just an idea Marty, may be helpful, may be not.

If yor design comp is in aid of a school, you may be able to secure sponsorship for the prize - like a new computer for example.

Hmm. That wouldn´t work for those of us on the other side of the pond. I´m thinking aloud here, but in general, I´ve always found that if there is any feelgood PR (in the old-fashioned public relations sense) to be had, you can just about always get a corporation to donate a prize.

I´m a useless designer so won´t even try to enter your competition but you might want to think about prize sponsorship.

    As I said ... just a thought.

    e10,

That's a great idea, as you mentioned, it will probably be difficult to come up with a physical prize that would be useful to an international crowd.

As they say... cash is king.

    Thanks,

    Marty

I wonder if Amazon gift certificates are as useful to people from countries in which English is not their primary language.
