Start with your onpage before you even think about offpage (backlinks/marketing).

Onpage: meta tags, header tags, keyword density, titling your subpages correctly, image optimization, etc.

Offpage: backlinks from as many types of platforms as possible (not referring to hundreds of thousands of links, just different types of links), press releases that are optimized, get a good mixture of nofollow and dofollow links.

Always start with keyword research. Seek out low competition terms with high amounts of traffic. This is probably the #1 key aspect of SEO. You can build the best website on the planet, but if the competition is too high and you don't have the resources to rank it, then its not going to get any traffic.

Use the Google Keyword tool but just for traffic analysis. Anything that comes up in the tool is likely already been spotted by every other SEO that has gone after that niche. Instead, think outside the box using your head.
