Hi all, I'm glad I found this forum. I do web development but really get a kick out of web scraping and web data mining. I guess I'm a bit strange really. I've scraped all sorts of different web sites for all sorts of reasons like:
    • General Research
    • Recovering Blog Entries for people so they can be migrate to a new site
    • Price Comparisons
    • Product Technical Comparisons
    • Search Engine Rankings for SEO
    • Backlink Analysis for SEO
    • Building Product Spreadsheets and Databases
    • Getting Company Data
    • Building Directories
    • Scraping the Twitter stream for particular keywords
The list goes on and on!

My Development Toolkit consists of Unix, Ruby, TextMate, Coda, Photoshop CS3, a handful of Macs and a iPhone 3GS. I work full time in the web and mobile content space for a very large telco and am the Engineering Manager responsible for the platforms that deliver millions of content alerts to customers every month. I also do freelance web scraping when someone needs it.

Thanks to my full time work, I've managed to do high profile online projects with Google, Apple, Microsoft and Yahoo. But one of the coolest things about my work is that I ge to see a lot of the mobile /cell phones before they hit the market. It's all usually super secret stuff though.

Anyhow, glad to be here now and hope to make a few friends here.

    Cheers!
