Webmasterworld and Google

Did anyone notice how webmasterworld is on top of many of Google's serps but every time you click on it it asks you to register for a fee? Well I think that's stopped I just visited one of those threads and it let me read it even though I've never subscribed to it. And I couldn't even sign up for an account but I just did just right now. Maybe webmasterworld is free again? Don't know yet that's why I want to see if you guys can access it like I can.

    Thank you

I used to frequent WebmasterWorld years ago. I will never, ever bother with them again. I'm sick of seeing their pages in SERPs only to get that damn registration screen. I don't know why Google even allows that crap. It's bait-and-switch, plain and simple. When I search for something I want information, not a registration page!

I know that doesn't answer your question, but I just needed to rant!

But why do they get away with it? Google employees even participate on the forum! At least they did way back when I used to visit it.

I had some funny thing 10 days ago.

I opened Webmasterworld from my home PC ( I still can open it today ), then I went on vacation to Croatia, and wanted to check it from Internet Club and couldnt.
As I said when cam back home, I continued to opening it normal.

I think how it works is they list all datacenter IPs for google and when it visits the page it doesnt get the register page but the content. So the spiders get free run on the site but we dont get to view it.

Personally I think they should get banned for doing something like that. Google wants to display the most relevant search results for the keywords. Nothing from that domain is relevant because it lands on a register page.

A few years ago there was still a backdoor link that you can follow to just read the thread.
However that thing has also been gone i noticed.

Anyway i don't see the advantage in paying for just using their forum.
Every info you need is right here on DP for free ;)

Exactly! If I pulled that kind of nonsense I'd be sent to the crap bin and rightly so.

I just went to the site and was able to only read one thread, any other thread requires a login or membership. Just a tease?

WMW's registration has always been free (but for the supporter forum) and it has been using cloaking for some times now
