    Hi,
Just wondering if anyone knows of one of these, as I was thinking of setting one up and wondered whether it had a chance of being successful, providing it had plenty of advertising?
    Thanks,
    Simon

How would you advertise in a chat room? Just setup a bot to spam the channel at regular intervals?

The problem with chat rooms is that when you get 40+ people in them, a single conversation is nearly impossible to keep track of and people break off into private rooms.

Is it doable? Yes. But it wouldn't be easy and there would be alot of technical and behavioral issues you'd have to find ways to work around.

I meant advertise the website, not have advertising in the chatroom.

If I made one, would it be an idea to make a lot of different rooms, so users could simply join in the main chat, or go into a smaller room with less people?

Well most chat server programs enable users to create their own private rooms on the fly.

But the question you should really be addressing here is - what could a webmaster chat room offer that a forum like this couldn't?

Off the top of my head...spam...lots and lots of spam...spambots can do some horrible things in chat programs. Most spambots these days can rotate their ip address on every connection attempt so it's virtually impossible to keep them out now.

Ah, maybe it's not such a good idea then. I just thought it could get a fair amount of users because you can get instant answers/replies. Although that maybe doesn't apply to this forum as there are so many people, but often on forums you can wait up to a week to get a decent answer...
Thanks for the advice though, +rep

Well I'm not saying it's a bad idea, but like any major initiative you have to think it through entirely. Spam is just the start of your problems with something like this.

Don't lose hope. If you want to do it, then do it. Just plan it all out ahead of time.

Good luck. If you do find a way to make it work, be sure to post it on this forum so people can break it for you ;)

I don't think that most webmasters have the time to chat. Forums works best for webmasters.

In this case, why does this forum have over eight and a half million posts from nearly 200,000 members???

It's funny you made this post. I had been thinking the same thing for a few weeks - why wouldn't you want a place where you can conduct real time ecommerce 24x7? So last night I created a quick webmaster chat page - it's not beautiful but it's functional. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Cool, I look forward to hearing about it. I thought exactly the same as you, and I think if you advertise it well enough then it should be pretty successful. I would have thought buying Sig spots on here would get you quite a bit of traffic. Anyway, good luck, and fill us in after a month or so!
