Webmaster tools - sharp drop in number of indexed pages?!

I am trying to get around 5,500 pages indexed and have submitted a sitemap for them.

The number of indexed pages for my site (as shown on the Sitemaps page of Webmaster tools) was creeping up and had reached around 800, and now has suddenly bombed down to 300 or so!

Should I take this seriously, or do these fluctuations happen? A lot of these pages are product pages, could Google be frowning on this?

Even I noticed a sharp drop in the number of pages indexed by the google. This happened some two days back! I think it is a normal phenomenon and will get back to normal soon :)

    I dont think a fluctuation.
Maybe Google detect you buy and sell links to people.
Google will de index the domain or page that have been marked in their system

Naaa... Like I said, the results are back to normal now.

Plus I have NEVER bought or sold links and I never will, so that would be a mistake on their part!

markowe happened to us a few weeks ago and lasted a day or three. It seemed to coincide with a 75% drop in bot visits. Never did figure out why it happened.

Funnily enough, I saw a massive increase in bot visits at that time, followed by the complete absence of the Googlebot for two days subsequent. Google moves in mysterious ways...
