WebMaster Tools > Settings > Preferred Domain > Error

Okay, so in my webmaster tools I confirmed my account and all, but right after it credited to my account, I deleted the verification meta tag because I wasn't sure if it had a positive or negative affect (my guess was negative).

Everything else works, but when I try to set the preferred domain as domain.com instead of www.domain.com it says that I need to verify that I own www.domain.com first.

Why is this? Was I supposed to leave the meta tag in? Was I supposed to at minimum change this before removing the tag? Any idea how I can fix this?

It will verify your Domain.com but First You have to Verify that you own the actual page www.Domain.com!

    1) Go to Webmaster Tools in Google Accounts!
    2) Go to Add a Site and Submit your Domain as "www yourdomain.com"
    3) Complete the Verification Process preferably by ( Verification Method HTML file ) it works best!
This insures that verification is always reachable, via www.domain.com or domain.com ( You know, incase you change the whole page, or have an "on the fly" dynamic page!)
    4) After you have verified that you own BOTH then It will state that the Domain has been Verified!

Yes, I met this problem, so you just add domain.com first. Anyway, it works for me
