I'd recommend using Auto Host Manager, but it doesn't seem to work for a lot of people anymore.

I've just started using Account Lab Plus and I must say it's pretty good.

I have seen on the web site Ahosting.biz that they provide different belling software for old and new clients.
For old they provide WHMAutoPilot and for new - ModernBill.

I've seen a lot of hosts who use phpcoin, it's not rubbish, if you do not utilize it properly or do not know how to, then it will be rubbish, but hey it's free.

I recommend WHMCS, even though it's not free, you can find hosts who can give you WHMCS as an addon for a cheap price.

Meanwhile, if you do not want any of the above, I recommend checking this billing/support software out:

    http://ihostdev.com

I'm not sure if you will like it, but it's worth a look.

I love clientexec, it is not as expensive as WHCMS and it is still awesome. You can get a cheap license at licensepal (google for it).

its not completely rubbish but yes, it lacks many features.

their version which i think is in development has many features.

but for free, its a good alternative.you can try it first and if you don't like it, then there are many paid options available.

    there is WHMCS, modern bill.

    i prefer WHMCS personally
