What do you all recommend for a web site stats solution? I have tried Google Analytics, but it doesn't seem to work with template based sites. I have used LiveStats, but it cuts off referring URLs after ? and such. What is a good solution that will not have those two limitations? I am fine with paying on a monthly basis (as long as it is affordable).
I am an AWStats enthousiast. AWStats can deal with template based sites and you can keep or remove the query string in the referrer URL... and it is free. To be fair, many stats solutions can do a lot more when you spend some time studying how to configure them. Jean-Luc
I have a friend who uses this. I personally have not used it, but he seems to be happy: http://www.statcounter.com/
Thanks for the suggestions. I took a look at statcounter, but it did not show the info I wanted to see. I still have not found one I like. Hopefully one will turn up.
Mint or ShortStat work nicely. I'm also an awSTATS fan -- but I personally use Google Analytics for all my needs.
ShortStat seems to be for OSX, correct? Just checking since that would knock that one out. Thanks much for the suggestions. I will check out the other one...
Nope, shortstat runs just fine on linux. I used to run it prior to Google Analytics. it works quite well -- it's the poor man's version of Mint really.
How come Google Analytics dont work with template based websites?. You just add the javascript in the header or footer file and it should be ok, nothing really special.
I am still a huge fan of www.sawmill.net? Are you looking for a Javascript based online subscription or an offline log analysis package?
For these sites, I am looking for a Javascript solution. I use WebLog Expert with most of my sites as a service on my Windows based servers. These two sites I need to provide stats for now are on Linux servers.
Google Analytics will work, you just need a bit more patience Once you added the code to the page, click the 'check status' button. It might very well say 'code not found blabla, last check 12:00 hundred years back' or similar, but give it about 8hours, and it should be online, another 8 or so hours to see the first stats. At least thats how it went for my sites.
Not in my experience, but the site seems to make you think it does. Very confusing. Anyhow, after a few hours of getting the 'not found' message, and not changing anything, it started to work.
Well, I went ahead and went with a paid service option for now. I finally found one that will at least meet my needs. It is not ideal (has some quirks), but it is good for the most part. I looked at the thread you mentioned, but I do not see the actual product name or URL. Did I overlook it?
Nope, you didn't miss anything. Only going to put the product name in when I get enough data to realise I'm not making a mistake by promoting the product. But I don't think I am.
Is it very difficult to install a new stats package on a shared hosting plan that uses cpanel? (for example)
