Web Site Down Even Though Successful Ping-What Now?

I have a former client, who contacted me to say that their web site had been down for over a week. Even though repeated attempts have been made to the hosting company for support, they have not received an answer. I also stepped in and e-mailed support yesterday, and have not received a response, nor has the issue been resolved.

Here is what I know. It is shared hosting. I have the IP address, and have compiled a list of web sites that share that IP address. All of the web sites are down, of course. I pinged the IP address and web site URL using command prompt, and I got a successful ping.

E-mail is working. Web site is not.

    What should I do now?

I have 16 web sites hosted with this company, as well. Fortunately, they are on other IP's. Some of them are paid up to 10 years in advance. I have used this company with no problems for nearly 10 years. I trust them; or I did before now.

Is there a way for me to have the domain and hosting transferred to another company without cooperation from the current host? Please offer any advice or experience you may have in this arena.

I feel awful that they are having this trouble with their site, and I am somewhat fearful this could happen to my other sites hosted with this company.

    Thank you!

No, another web designer has taken over their site(s) as of about a year ago because I work full-time otherwise, and just did web design on the side.

What could that resolve? What would he be checking for? Sorry, I am not very well versed in .htaccess files. I have made them before, but still don't fully understand them.
