Web servers

I have made some search but couldn't find an answer.
How can I set up a web server to host my different websites?
    Is it costly?
I'm just getting tired of my different hosting that shut this site down because of bandwidth or that site because of any reason...and have all my sites in my server that I control and that I pay.
    And is it worth it?

I have been researching this issue. I have no experience other than what I read. Well that and what info I can coax out of my son who does this stuff for the local university.

The next step up from shared hosting or a reseller account is a VPS. The more I read the more convinced I become that is a step to skip. Reason: if you read the fine print something is still shared. A high end vps will cost almost as much as a low end dedicated.

The step after that is a dedicated sever. The whole box is yours. Based on your questions and a conversation that I had with my son last night, you and I are in the same iglou. Only a "managed" sever would be safe for either of us to rent.

Costly or not depends on whether your sites are generating income. The best price I have seen is about $100 per month for a box with at least a gig of ram, managed, decent connection and with whm/cpanel. That was with a slower processor and a smaller (80G) hard drive.

There are many ways to get screwed when leasing one of these. It is not what they say, rather it is what they don't say that gets you. Betcha a buck you you get three offers in this thread for $49 and up. :)

If you have high traffic or high demand sites and can justify the expense, yes it is most likely worth it.

I wasn't thinking about leasing the whole box, but buying one, plug it into my wall and host my sites on it, forever...
Even if it is a small box, it will be just for me.
    Does that make sense, moneywise?

    On what kind of connection?

That is the real key. Can you push enough upstream bandwidth to make it work?

You still have the management issues. An open Linux box online is a hackers dream.

It is actually more costly to host the server at your own premises because for the most parts, the standard home based internet connections are pretty flaky when it comes to uploads (which is yours visitors downloads) and that most internet service providers would not allow you to host any kind of servers on their connections.

The benefit of a dedicated server at a datacenter is the redundancy and the 24/7 technical support + faster bandwidth speed.

The best option would really to find a reliable web host.

You'll have trouble finding a home ISP allowing you to run servers at your house. I would suggest though if you want to go that route is to buy/build a server and find a local datacenter will you can lease space at.

It looks like expensive for what it is.
I'll for a 100GB, 1TB Bw, unlimited domain, and so on for the 20 bucks/year deal I saw on here.

You have gone from one extreme to the other.

True satisfaction is some where in the middle. :)

interesting to see the thread here about buying your own server and keep it at home.

A good Datacenter will have redunant bandwidth, power supply as well as tech on site to make sure the system runs smoothly. What you put in a DC, you pay them for the space, fuel and air to the box.

If you have a dedicated box, you will need to secure and maintain it and it takes a lot of time. Espeically if there is a security patch being issued, you have to do it quickly or your box is toast. That is why managed service is expensive.

I do not quite get why VPS is not the way to go. It is true that there are things that are still shared but you have got a certain amount of resources that is allocated, so unless the whole box was oversold, then you should be ok. VPS is like having your own condo/apartment in a block, you get all your facilities but if there is a power cut to the block, you are still affected but other than that you can do what you need in your space and no one can affect you.
