Web Server Question

Discussion in 'Web Hosting' started by TheDuke2011, Sep 30, 2012.

    Hey,

I am developing a skill gaming website similar to worldwinner.com and king.com but it will obviously be a smaller scale at first. I am actually starting with 1-3 games. I am wondering what would be my best option for a web server. Should I pay monthly for something or just buy my own equipment. Anyone want to recommend specs for this server I will need? I am new when it comes to hosting and servers. Looking for some advice here.

    Hello there,

I would start off with a VPS, as it can be upgraded if needed. Once your site takes off, then I would look at a dedicated server, and make the decision to rent or purchase outright and co-locate.

    Regards,
    Chris

Creating my own may be tough since I am a newbie when it comes to this kind of stuff. Could you further explain a VPS. I have heard about it, but what exactly is the costs for something like this and how big can i upgrade it?

Yes it is very costly... i guess you should not put this on your options if you already know the cost..

This answer doesn't help me at all. Can you at least give me a range of a price it would cost me per month/year or even a set up price..

A decent VPS without a control panel will run you around $15/mo. or more, depending on the resources you need. A decent dedicated server will run you around $150/mo.

I would buy a Dedicated Server, install OpenVZ (or Xen) on it and create VPS' on that Dedicated server to keep the games in their own virtualized environment. That way, one game crashing or going wrong won't affect another where by you might loose a system process that you need or something drastic like that. So you'll have a Dedicated Server that hosts's VPS (Virtual Private Servers) on it where by the games are split into their own virtual environment with their own IP address and you can then configure the server environment on each VPS for each game to be the best it can be.

For Dedicated servers, I would recommend SecuredServers. The server that I would recommend is $78 /month and has 8GB RAM with an Xeon X3430 processor (although they often provide free upgrades to the X3440 depending on hardware availability).

Thanks a ton, I will look more into this as I get further into development. Anyone else have any suggestions? I am just looking to put a lot of food on my plate before I make the big decision.

No problemo! You may also consider buying game server slots. Simply do a quick search for 'gameserver slots' and you'll get a variety of results.
