Hi, i was wondering if it was possible to host my own websites from home. Ive googled it, but the only thing that comes up is websites that want you to buy hosting plans from them. So, basically, what im wanting is a cheap server, under a grand, to host my websites. the way i see it, ive spent close to 300 bucks on webhosting my websites on a dedicated server. but, everytime i want to do something cool or creative, guess what, we dont allow that here....or, its to processor intensive...blah, blah, blah. Any advice, or insight into hosting from home? Thanks
If it is dedicated server you can do whatever you like. To host from home is not good idea because of speed and quality of connection. Try an european company for better service without any restriction.
Well, it is totally up to you. You can host your own website from home, with a cheap pc, running LAMP (Linux, APache, MySQL and PHP) Speed will probably be the issue, for sure if your user need to download files from the website. You should try a VPS server, which is an alternative to a full blown dedicated server. If you are ready to spend 1000$ for a server your best bet would be to get a 30-50$ a month VPS server, and if you need more down the road, upgrade the VPS or get a dedi server. Also, what do you want to do that other host dont allow ? I might be able to help you.
Torrents, warez, adult is not allowed by most dedi providers...dunno if he's mentioning those as "something creative" Or he's thinking a shared hosting as dedi...
Ok, I say go for it... I get DSL out here in Colorado 5MBPS down 1MBPS up.. My friend and I ran the FIRST online hacker game sites on the internet, intrusionsec.com (its down now), we setup a private network of AIX, Solaris, Linux, and Window servers for people to hack, we had a real time online monitoring environment and point system we received anywhere from 1,000 - 2,000 visitors PER DAY to the website.. The webserver was a Sun 60 which is a crap server IMO but we could do what ever we wanted with it, and it supported the traffic and the game just fine. I'd say 90% of sites don't require a lot of bandwidth unless u r serving videos and such. A DSL connection in Colorado could support a probably about 5,000 visitors per day before it was a problem, I guess it all depends on what you get from your provider. I also use a company cari.net they give you 4MBPS and a celeron box for like $60/mo. But untill your site takes off host it from home. Go to your local USED PC store pick up a cheep linux server or sun box and have fun!!!
linsys, it's a bad idea if you're doing something serious...good if you wanna play around and kill time
You don't have the right host if you want to do something creative. You want a host that gives you a box with an O/S and hands full control to you. My company does this but will take any server off-line if it effects the network. If you need an unrestricted server in Europe shoot me a PM, I might be able to help. Sure you can host from home but its very unreliable for a number of reasons. I certainly wouldn't risk it with any of my live sites. Come on the day when every home is fitted with fibre.
its bluehost.com and im positive its dedicated. atleast, thats what they say. I sent them a support ticket, and they said the problem was solved. i tried again to install ffmpeg, and privileges still restricted. my service is up in 52 more days, so i got some time to figure out what im gonna do. right now, ive tried several sites and dont get much traffic, so, im not sure what im gonna do. thanks for all your advise. ill think about everyones input.
"Web Hosting" is not dedicated. I've used bluehost before, and it's not dedicated. Myself, I use http://www.layeredtech.com/ for a dedicated server company. It looks like the prices are "ridiculous" compared to bluehost, but it's becuase bluehost oversells their space and bandwidth. You basically get full control of a box in their datacenter, with layeredtech. WebhostingTalk.com is a good place for a lot of info on reviews of webhosts, VPS providers, or dedicated server providers.

I cant afford to pay 100 bucks a month for hosting, or dedicated servers. Maybe one day when my sites start making me money i will upgrade, but at the moment, its not in the game plan. but thanks for the heads up!
Try Xampp - it's free and easy to install Hope you have a high speed internet connection and electricity in your neighborhood is always up 27/7
You can try a VPS hosting from http://www.webhosting.uk.com/vps-hosting.php they allow ffmpeg on their VPS but you will have to take care that you don't overload the resourses on the VPS, which may affect other VPS's on the main hardware node.
You can do better than host from home: you can co-locate it. This'll allow you to receive server and service monitoring, technical and hardware support, along with security, fire protection, great faster connections, and an overall better [air-conditioned] environment.
That's better option but much expensive I think jblfan (OP) has told in his previous post that he is not in position for spending much on hosting better help him with some cheap and reliable host which he can afford. I think co-location is a bit expensive then VPS or dedicated.
if you are planning to host illegal files in a server you host from home , the police can come after you .
