Web-o-phobes & Sub Domains

I've got an interesting marketing campaign which I was planning to use a sub-domain for. My second though is regarding people now being able to use them properly.

I've not really used them much myself, but for a web-o-phone, I can see the following happening.

    Address is; promotion.addy.com
    Idiots type: www.promotion.addy.com - 404

I'm trying to decide between getting a .com and 303ing it to the sub domain or just letting rip with the subdomain.

    Does it matter much? Thoughts?

use mod rewrite if you use an apache webserver.

We use subdomains as well and all sub.url are redirected to www.sub.url

If you deal with the general public, make it as redundant and error proof as possible. I have one domain (byrequest.dj) that some idiots can never find because you tell them www.byrequest.dj and they insist on typing www.byrequest.dj.com.

I'd love to have byrequest.com, but some damn company in Canada sat on it for a few years, then it got picked up by someone and turned into a fake site. I'm not willing to shell out anything more than $100 to get a domain name for a company that only has annual gross revenues of $50k. And I'm not going to raise my prices just so I can make a bride and groom pay some butt-wipe's idea of a "fair price". I'd rather spend more on SEO so that any searches involving the word DJs/disc jockeys/wedding and faro/north dakota produce my site first. Besides, I'm not far from that mark as it is. For all my important key terms, I rank in the top 10 if not the top 3. Most of my secondary key terms also produce top ten results.
